VIDEO: Stony Batter – Waiheke Island
Stony Batter on Waiheke Island, New Zealand, is an old WWII gun emplacement designed to defend Auckland from the Japanese. The site contains a maze of underground tunnels that linked the gun turrets on the surrounding hills. While the tunnels themselves aren’t overly exciting, history and WWII buffs will find it interesting, and children will love running up and down the corridors shouting creepy sounds and hearing their echoes. What makes the site worth a visit are the surrounding grounds, which offer views of the Hauraki gulf and hikes to secluded beaches. There is an entrance charge of $8 NZD per person and $5 NZD to rent a flashlight (or bring your own). There is no charge to visit and walk the grounds. We recommend a visit to Stony Batter for the scenic views and nice walking trails.
